Treatments available in Ireland and abroad

Where possible, the preferred treatment for cholangiocarcinoma is surgery, as this is usually the only treatment which can potentially provide a cure. Unfortunately, only a small portion of bile duct cancers are operable at the time they are first found.

The current first line treatment for inoperable cholangiocarcinoma is chemotherapy (usually Gemcitabine and Cisplatin) plus immunotherapy (usually Durvalumab).

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved Durvalumab for cholangiocarcinoma in December 2022.

The combination of Gemcitabine and Cisplatin plus Durvalumab is available to private patients in Ireland.

Unfortunately, as of April 2025, Durvalumab is still not available to public patients in Ireland.

Please find below further information on the treatment options mentioned above, as well as other treatment options. Where possible, we have indicated whether the treatment in question is available in Ireland.
